Unlike Disney's romantic animation "Lady and the Tramp," President Donald Trump's recent comments about immigration shows that he has no interest in sharing a plate of spaghetti with the real Lady--Lady Liberty. President Trump's comments that America needs more immigrants from Norway (do they even want to immigrate?) and less from "sh**hole" countries is not only appalling, but they run counter to the cornerstone idea that America is the land of opportunities and a beacon of hope for poor people around the world.
Yes, Haiti and other countries are impoverished, but America's success is, in large part, built from the blood, sweat, and tears of poor immigrants looking to improve their lives. This is what make our country different. America gives people--yes, even poor people--an opportunity. Inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty are the famous words:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Shamefully, President Trump's crude and disturbing outburst clearly reveals that he has yet to embrace Lady Liberty and all that she represents.
